ABOUT THIS PIECE

When I saw that the theme for this application was heritage and culture, the first thing that came to mind was the song Cielito Lindo, beautifully sung by Vicente Fernández. This traditional Mexican folk song is woven into the fabric of our community, a melody that resonates during our most joyous celebrations. It inspired the name of my work because it embodies the heart of who we are.

Frida Kahlo also came to mind—an iconic Mexican artist whose deeply personal works reflected themes of pain, identity, and resilience. I felt compelled to incorporate marigolds, an emblematic flower in her paintings, and a hummingbird, a symbol she often associated with love, luck, freedom, and even suffering. These elements connect us to her legacy while honoring the richness of our culture.

To complete the piece, I included Talavera—a traditional Mexican pottery style celebrated for its vibrant colors and intricate designs. Talavera is not just art; it’s a testament to our history and craftsmanship, passed down through generations.

Singers and artists are vital to preserving, celebrating, and enriching the cultural and heritage identity of our communities. Through this standpipe, I aim to weave together art, music, traditions, and social awareness, creating a story that inspires my community to celebrate who we are and to feel empowered to create.

I am profoundly grateful to the City of McAllen for granting me this opportunity to craft my very first standpipe and share a narrative that reflects our heritage. It is an honor to contribute to a story that will leave a lasting impact on our community. - Kate Pedraza

ABOUT THIS ARTIST

I am a 23-year-old college student pursuing a master’s degree in fine arts, with a focus on either 2D or 3D studio art. I hold a bachelor’s degree in education and have extensive experience working with children. My goal is to further my education to use art as a form of escape and self-expression for people of all ages or to teach at the university level, helping students channel their inner thoughts and creativity into meaningful works.

From childhood to adulthood, drawing has always been a part of my life, whether in sketchbooks or doodling during classes. As a multimedia artist, I am passionate about exploring various mediums and am currently captivated by the art of sculpture.
